At Song Plug we always try to inject our readers with the newest of new music. It doesn’t get any newer than West Coast Weekend out of Los Angeles who dropped their debut single “Heart Attack” this week. Spanning 3 minutes and 30 second, this bass driven indie bop rides the line of a funky stride matching theme song and an electronic, car filling nighttime cruise. Absolutely not at all what you’d expect out of a debut single. The production, mixing, mastering… all experienced studio quality for “Heart Attack”. Dig deeper and you’ll learn Grammy award winning producer Josh “Igloo” Monroy (Ludacris, JoJo, Quincey Jones) leaves his stamp on the track and really sending West Coast Weekend out swinging with a strong opening track.
If you’re a fan of the wave of alt-pop rock like Portugal, The Man or Young the Giant, you’ll likely enjoy this one. The best part of the whole song in my opinion however, is how you can hear a lot of different avenues and sounds coming together. By design, the band has really injected each member’s experience and their vibe of California (and other corners of the country) into their work, and into this track. Because of this, there’s absolutely something for everyone in “Heart Attack”. You’ll without a doubt stumble over a riff, lyric, progression or tone that you’d normally associate with your favorite artist or band.
West Coast Weekend has a free show at The Satellite in Los Angeles, California on June 10th with Sleeplust and Molly Moore, as they debut live for the first time. Tickets and info soon on the band’s social media. Even more exciting, be on the lookout for the debut EP dropping this June! More than anything… check them out on your favorite site and listen to “Heart Attack” below.
